When he has diarrhoea for such a long time it is possible the intestinal villi of your dog can not absorbe nutrients as well as before. Also digestion can decrease. This can lead to a deficiency of vitamins.
Causes of diarrhoea
Your dog is suffering from diarrhoea for a long time. In a viral infection, or an abrupt transition to another food, in general it is for a short period of time. Causes which can give diarrhoea for a longer period of time are:
- food allergy
- round or tapeworms
- parasite giardia
- bad digestion
How to take care of this problem
Food allergy can occur from all ingredients available in food. Your dog probably gets the same food for years. What dogs normally are sensitive to is, beef, chicken, milk, egg, maize and wheat. And this is present in lots of commercial food. You can change to food with other kinds of proteins to which your dog has not been in contact with before, like rabbit or duck, combined with tapioca or potato. Or transfer to food with hydrolysed proteins, these proteins are clipped in very small pieces which your dog’s body will not recognize as protein. Give this food at least 8 to 10 weeks. You may give nothing else, so no dog biscuits, dog bone, crust of bread, otherwise this hypo allergenic food has no use and your dog will continue to itch. The transfer to other food needs to be gradually, over about a week time.
Worms and Giardia
Probably you have already used a good wormer, like Panacur to tackle both causes. Preferably this cure will be given for five days. Your veterinarian can examine the faeces for parasites and the grade of digestion.
The pancreas of your dog can be less active. Digestion of fat will be especially decreased, which causes your dog to lose weight. Your veterinarian can examine the faeces or blood.
Or maybe his food contains ingredients he cannot digest, like grains. It is important to offer him a good quality digestible food. You can give his meals more often a day, for instance 4 or 5 times a day. When you decide to transfer to another food it is best to do this gradually, over about a week.
Which food supplements to use
You can add a Moor product to the food. Humic acid makes the digestive tract more resistant against disease and binds to toxins to help them be excreted. The mucosa of stomach and intestines become in optimal condition. Silicic acid strengthens the immune system and increases the healing process of wounds in the mucosa.
This product can be combined with a Probiotic. Maybe you know the term probiotics. Probiotics are meant to upgrade the darmflora, the ‘good’ bacteria in the intestines of your dog. They form proteins which can make pathogens harmless. Probiotics increase resistance to pathogens.
